Historical Significance

Portuguese Cannons & Fort Remains

Captain James Horsburgh of the East India Company conducted the first systematic hydrographic survey of the Lakshadweep archipelago between 1787 and 1800, producing charts that remained in use until the 1950s. Minicoy Lighthouse Construction
The Minicoy Lighthouse, standing 47 metres tall, was commissioned by the British Bombay Marine Department in 1847 and first lit in 1885. Built from locally quarried coral stone and imported cast iron, it guided vessels on the Colombo–Aden shipping lane. The lighthouse is one of the oldest surviving colonial structures in the Union Territory and remains operational today.

Underwater Shipwreck Discoveries

Submerged Prehistoric Settlements
Side-scan sonar surveys and diver investigations off Kalpeni and Kadmat identified submerged structural features at depths of 8–15 metres — including stone alignments, post holes, and midden deposits — consistent with prehistoric habitation sites inundated by post-glacial sea level rise. Radiocarbon dating of organic material from the middens returned dates of 2,800–3,200 BP.

SS Transhuron — Grounding on Kiltan Reef
On 26 September 1974, the SS Transhuron lost propulsion after an electrical fire caused a major failure in its control system. Drifting without power, the vessel struck the reef near Kiltan Island, rupturing its hull and causing a spill of naval fuel. There was no loss of life — the crew was evacuated safely — but the vessel was abandoned and could not be refloated. Kiltan lies close to an important international sea route in the Arabian Sea, on the historic corridor between the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia, making the absence of navigational aids here a serious hazard. Marine archaeological studies have shown that Kiltan and other Lakshadweep islands witnessed numerous shipwrecks over the centuries, providing valuable evidence of the region's importance in Indian Ocean trade and maritime history.

Historical Significance
The SS Transhuron grounding was the direct catalyst for the establishment of the Kiltan South Lighthouse. A temporary light was installed at Kiltan in 1974 immediately after the incident, and a permanent lighthouse was commissioned in 1977 — transforming maritime safety on this stretch of the Arabian Sea. The wreck is now a thriving artificial reef visited by divers.

Kiltan South Lighthouse — Established After the Transhuron Grounding
The repeated occurrence of shipwrecks near Kiltan — most dramatically the SS Transhuron grounding on 26 September 1974 — highlighted the urgent need for better navigational aids on this stretch of the Arabian Sea. As a direct result, the Kiltan South Lighthouse was first established with a temporary light in 1974, and a permanent lighthouse was commissioned in 1977 to guide ships safely through the area and reduce the risk of further accidents. The lighthouse remains operational today.

Lakshadweep Museum, Kavaratti
The Lakshadweep Museum on Kavaratti Island is the primary repository for the islands' archaeological and cultural heritage. Established in 1983, it houses over 1,200 artefacts spanning the Buddhist, Islamic, Portuguese, and British periods, along with ethnographic collections of traditional boat-building tools, weaving implements, and navigational instruments.
